When Will the Serpent Strike Me Down?- from The Poems of Bonnie Cott (a character study)

When will the serpent strike me down?
In my soul mortal sins do lie,
And in my soul these sins were grown,
And there will live until I die.

These are not deeds which I have done,
but who I am in heart and mind.
My last breath would need be gone,
For these desires be left behind.

No effort made nor lesson learned
has changed my heart in love.
No Good Book read nor sermon heard,
Has made me fear a dove.

So, when will the serpent strike me down?
I welcome judgement’s bite.
Or is my sentence to be known
As I wake with each morning’s light?
