Once
filled with
blue sky and
clouds bouncing
on water’s glittering
peaks, the mountains
above, though far from sea,
were drowned with rain and beaten
by hurricane wind. The land around abruptly
collapsed, careening, gravity carrying earth, buildings,
roads, and timbers tumbling through rapids to valleys below,
crashing into water and swallowed by the silty bed of a dammed lake.
